If there is only one conversation going (with 2 participants), the Conference icon will be grayed out (unavailable for use).

You won't be able to start a conference call from within the current conversation window. You will have to start a new (second) conversation first, by going back to the Main Toolbar and hitting Dial. Then hit the conference icon to bring the two conversations into one with 3 participants.

The number of people who can be conferenced into the call is limited only by space on your desktop, and each person in the conversation will have his/her own column in which to type.

Conference will also be available if you are in a conversation, then someone else calls you.
